This is the most widely spread trout in Patagonia, due to its adaptation capacity to the environment. There is also a variety with a peculiar anatomy in Santa Cruz River, which migrates into the sea with feeding purposes, where it acquires an incredible size.
It can be sorted out from other members of the Salmonidae family due to the wide purple band on each side, silver color below the purple and almost white on the belly, along with black spots all over the body. Those specimens living in lakes near to glaciers are darker colored on the back. Omnivorous, its diet is based on invertebrates

Brown Trout: (Salmo trutta)

Introduced from Europe in most of the patagonic lakes and rivers. The biggest in size, nacional record attained 16.3 Kg (Astonishing 36 pounds!). Its golden color is characteristic; brown back, silver sides and yellowish belly. It also shows orange spots on the sides and notorious dark spots with a clear rim on the sides, well below the side line, the back and the opercula. The adipose fins show a orange color. Also omnivorous, it hunts from invertebrates to fish, and even small mice.

Landlocked Salmon (Salmo salar sebago):

Its distribution in Patagonia is limited to a very few closed habitats. Only lives on rivers and lakes of Los Alerces National Park, down to Cholila and Tigre River ( famous for having a house said to have been home of Butch Cassidy!). Also in the Limay River basin, up to the Traful lake and river. It is found also in the lakes Huechulaufquen, Epulaufquen, Currhue Grande in Neuquén and Limay River and Alicurá artificial lake in Río Negro.
Beautiful fish with a slender body, and a favorite of the sportsmen due to its beauty and fighting spirit. Its head is proportionally smaller than its body. The body and tail are narrower, its back bluish with black spots, some of them in the form of an "X". No spots on the fins, small spots on the opercula, if any.

Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis):

It is the showiest trout by its remarkable coloration. Its back of a olive color with worm like spots of green to yellowish green. The pectoral, pelvic, ventral and caudal fins show a white previous end with a black edge and reddish spots on the sides of the body, frequently with a bluish shade. At spawning time, their coloration increases to a orange on the belly, occasionally with yellow spots. Body is covered with smaller size scales than other Patagonian members of the trout family. It is smaller in size, also. It inhabits colder waters and is frequently found in streams of subterranean water. It is frequent to find specimens of 4kg or more of body weight. It feeds on snails and a variety of invertebrates living in the streams.

Sea Trout (Oncorhynchus sp.):

Pacific salmons originate on the North Pacific, on a wide distribution zone that extend to the two oceanic costs. Its main characteristic is that they die after spawning. They also present an aggressive behavior at that moment, until its migration to sea. However, its high rates of growth due to its oceanic life, make them very attractive when you are searching for trophies. In the Corcovado River, several captured specimens weighed 20 Kg and more.

Atlantic Trout (salmo salar):

Widely distributed in the North Atlantic. Nevertheless, its populations are in regression in most of the countries, mainly by inaccessibility to egg laying areas and commercial fishing on the sea. It was artificially introduced in Argentina by the beginning of the 20th century, only surviving its "locked" variety. In spite of that, it appeared a few years ago in the Lago Puelo basin, and bred exceptionally well to the point of being one of the most abundant species in its juvenile stage. It is a fish that reaches enormous sizes. Very powerful and strong, its fight when captured is unbelievable. Unlike the Pacific Salmon, this species can reproduce up to three or four times before its death; nevertheless, a great percentage dies on its first time. An interesting aspect of its biology is that sometimes males are sexually mature in the rivers, and fertilize females.

Dorado (Salminus Maxillosus):

I is highly valued by anglers for its superb fighting spirit. Its habitat is the Paraná River basing to the River Plate, and their tributaries, down to where the River Plate joins the Atlantic Ocean. Our fish area is in Esquina (Corrientes). The fishing methods are spinning, trolling and fly cast.
