Click to enlarge. Geese Hunting Argentina – South America
Wild Geese: (choloephaga picta)

Also called avutarda or cauquen comun. This is one of the two species of geese whose hunting is permitted. The other is the grey headed cauquen, (choloephaga poliocephala). These are birds that, in huge flocks, consume large amounts of grass and seeds, its hunting encouraged because they affect the agriculture. Sometimes they have to be driven off the lands by scaring them off with light planes, trying to send them to other places where the impact to the production is not relevant.
Approximately in may, they begin to gather and wait for favorable winds to migrate north. It is usual to see flocks of more than 150 birds. Hunting method is near wheat or barley lots, usually with decoys. Hunters hide in blinds, generally at dawn.

Ducks: (Anas silbilatrix etc.)

There is a great variety of ducks. Most common are: the Colorado (red) (Anas oyanoptera), Picazo (Netta peposaca), Maicero (Corn Duck), (Anas Giorgica).
Duck hunting is carried from blinds near water zones or lakes, waiting for the arrival of the flocks, using decoys sometimes.

European Hare: (Lepus Europaeus)

This species was introduced by Sulpicio Gómez in 1896, who imported them from Austria, and released in the Tandil área of Buenos Aires Province. There was another small release before this one, in 1888, by the German Consul in Santa Fe Province.
They adapted well due to the abundance of food and lack of natural predators. Its habits are mainly nocturnal, since they hide in caves during the day. They measure up to 25 inches and its weight varies from 6 to 9 pounds.

Vizcacha (Lagostomus Máximo):

The second largest South American rodent, the carpincho o capibara being the first. This is an animal whose flesh is considered a delicacy, with nocturnal habits . It builds large complexes of tunnels, and its hunting is permitted and encouraged in most of the country since it is considered a plague.

Partridge: (Nothura Maculosa)

There are several species of Partridge, most of them huntable during season. Most common are the martineta copetona and the perdiz chica (small)(nothura maculosa). The colorada is the biggest of all, but its hunting is not permitted in most of the provinces. There is also the very sporty perdiz de monte (nothoprocta cinerascens), which lives in the bush and woods.

Torcaza Dove: (Zenaida Auriculata)

Lives in most of the provinces, and its hunting is permitted and encouraged. It can live in bushy or wood zones, in plains or in low bushes, Texas style.
Their natural camouflage is excellent.

Cotorra (Myopsitta Monacha):

A species of parrot, also called Catita or Common Cotorra. In several provinces has been declared a plague, due to its damage to agriculture.
It is found in rural areas of northern and central Argentina.
  Click to enlarge. Argentina Fox Hunting – South America Fox: (Dusicyon Griseus), (Pseudolopex Culpaeus)

Carnivorous mammal of the canidae family. Two are the main varieties: Grey and Colorado (red). Its hunting is permitted in several provinces. According to the variety, it can measure 28 to 32 inches from the muzzle to the base of the tail. Its tail alone, 12 to 16 inches. The best season for its fur is winter, and there is a slight variation in color due to its different habitats.

Wood pigeon:
(Columba Maculosa,
Columba Picazurro)


These are the two species of doves inhabiting the entre rios and la pampa province. Its hunting is permitted and encouraged, with no limits whatsoever in quantity. On a typical shooting day, it is not unusual to shoot 1,000 (yes, one thousand) cartridges. They can make great damage to the production if they are not shot in large quantities.
